PolyMod® high performance elastomers are polymer modified to have very low coefficients of friction and optimized wear life. PolyMod® high performance elastomers are only available from PolyMod® Technologies Inc.
 |
| Friction and Wear |
In custom or standard applications where friction and wear are problems, PolyMod® high performance elastomer materials can significantly enhance performance, efficiency and longevity.
PolyMod® high performance elastomer materials are ideal not only for pneumatic and hydraulic applications but any application where reduced friction and long life are important.
The wide variety of PolyMod® high performance elastomer materials provide system designers with many options for maximizing system performance.
|
| Coefficient of Friction |
Based upon evaluations using ASTM D1894, the friction coefficients of PolyMod® high performance elastomers are significantly less than those for conventional elastomers.
Normalizing the coefficients of friction of the conventional elastomers to 1.0, the PolyMod® Advantage can be illustrated.
Remember, the coefficients of friction of many standard elastomers are greater than 1.0.
|
| Abrasive Wear |
Based on evaluations using Taber Abrasion (ASTM D3389) PolyMod® high performance elastomers show significant improvement in wear life.
The wear of the conventional elastomer is normalized to 1.0.
The wear of the PolyMod® high performance material is shown as a factor less than 1.0 indicating improved wear resistance.

| Physical Properties |
PolyMod® does not change physical properties.

| Improved Performace |
PolyMod® high performance elastomers because of their enhanced properties run cooler and are tougher than conventional elastomers, therefore, they do not suffer the accelerated deterioration of conventional elastomers.
The above figure illustrates the durability and enhanced performance of PolyMod® high performance elastomers. The results are for a pneumatic test at 100 psi internal pressure. The rods were cycled with a 3" stroke at 1 Hz. Rod temperatures were monitored during the test. As is evident from the results, the PolyMod® high performance seals generated less frictional heat and consequently were still functioning when the test was stopped. During the test period not only did the standard seals generate significantly more frictional heat but several of them failed. The lower friction of the PolyMod® high performance seals resulted in less heat generation which translates into longer life and improved energy efficiency.
The above figure illustrates the excellent performance of PolyMod® high performance seals against an IHCP rod with a superfine finish (.075µm Ra). The test conditions were identical to those listed. The lower heat generation of the PolyMod® high performance seal was significant compared to the standard seal which failed early in the test program. Even with superfine finishes, PolyMod® high performance seals have much longer life than standard seals.
The above figure illustrates the advantage of using PolyMod® high performance O-Ring energizers for PTFE cap seals. The test conditions again were identical to those stated previously. The cap seal energized by a standard O-Ring generated more frictional heat and wear occurred at both the sealing surface and PTFE/energizer interface resulting in cap failure. The cap energized by the PolyMod® high performance O-Ring was integral when the test was stopped and the PolyMod® high performance O-Ring exhibited no wear. The PolyMod® high performance O-Rings low friction and less abrasive nature prolonged the life of the PTFE cap.

AND FOR FLUOROELASTOMERS THERE IS ULTRAMOD™
|
UltraMod™ is a proprietary process which results in the enhancement of the low friction characteristics of PolyMod® fluoroelastomers. This technology results in a further reduction in the coefficient of friction. Typically, an additional 40% to 60% reduction in static and dynamic coefficients of friction, as measured per ASTM D 1894, is observed. The net result is that UltraMod™fluoroelastomers can have coefficient of friction values that are 20% to 30% of the original, non-modified fluoroelastomer.
